Everyone knows Cities: Skylines and SimCity, but there are plenty of great city-building and management games that don’t get nearly enough attention. Some lean into deep mechanics, others try new ideas that break the usual city-builder mold.

Which lesser-known game deserves more recognition?
  • Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic – A brutal economy builder where everything is state-controlled, and logistics are as important as city planning.
  • Against the Storm – A city builder with roguelike mechanics, where you manage multiple settlements and race against the relentless cycle of storms.
  • Dawn of Man – Build a prehistoric settlement and guide it from the Stone Age to the Iron Age while fighting off starvation, predators, and the elements.
  • Foundation – A medieval city builder with organic growth, where villages form naturally instead of rigid grids.
What hidden gems do you recommend? Which city-building or management game deserves a bigger player base?

Well, Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is a game that I believe more people should play. It is a deep, logistics-heavy socialist economy sim. Another city builder game more people should play is Against the Storm. I love this because each settlement feels unique. Unlike traditional builders, I must adapt to random conditions.

One game that deserves more recognition is Against the Storm. It breaks the traditional city-builder structure by using roguelike progression. Instead of one giant permanent city, you manage multiple settlements under harsh environment. That kind of design forces adaptation which is good for the game.
