War Mongrels drops on Nintendo Switch September 16, putting you in charge of a small guerrilla team on the Eastern Front of World War II. You start with two Wehrmacht deserters and pick up more characters along the way, each with unique skills. Missions involve sabotage, document theft, killing officers, and helping civilians. The game forces you to plan carefully using its pause-and-plan mode, but once spotted, you’re on your own.

The game leans heavily on historical detail, uniforms, weapons, locations, and events are all recreated accurately. The brutality of the Eastern Front isn’t softened, and the tactical gameplay matches that tone: mistakes are punished, and the AI is unforgiving.

Problems show up quickly, though. Mission variety feels thin after a few hours. Objectives often boil down to minor variations on sabotage or assassination, which can make late-game feel repetitive. On Switch, tight controls and managing multiple characters simultaneously can get awkward, especially in high-pressure scenarios, and the small screen can make precise tactical planning frustrating. The game’s historical accuracy is impressive, but that doesn’t fix pacing issues or limited mission design.

War Mongrels will appeal to hardcore tactical players who can tolerate repetition and awkward Switch controls. Casual players should be aware it’s not forgiving and rewards careful, patient play.
