Knights of the Crusades leaves Early Access and launches version 1.0 on September 6, 2025. Reverie World Studios, with indie.io, confirmed the date after a long Early Access run shaped heavily by player feedback.
You start as a minor knight with little more than a band of soldiers. The aim is to carve out a power base during the First Crusade, build a military order, and expand until you’re capable of challenging major powers.
The setting isn’t limited to Jerusalem. Campaigns stretch into Spain, North Africa, and the Baltic, with options to fight pagans and Slavs as much as Muslims. You can play as the Templars, the Emirate of Tripoli, or one of 52 kingdoms with over 100 lords. A sandbox mode lets you ignore historical rails and try alternate routes through medieval history.
The game mixes grand strategy management with real-time battles. Armies need food, materials, and logistics to function. Winning fights doesn’t mean much if your supply chain collapses. Victories can snowball into territories, kingdoms, or empires if you keep the momentum.
Early Access updates focused on balance, interface improvements, and giving underrepresented factions more depth. Pagan and Slavic powers have distinct units and mechanics rather than being filler. According to design director Konstantine Fomenko, the goal was to show the full scope of the Crusades, including conflicts outside the Middle East and the ability to resist Catholic expansion.
Version 1.0 adds narrative campaigns, cultural overhauls across Christian, Muslim, Orthodox, and Pagan factions, reworked diplomacy and naval systems, plus more player freedom when creating Holy Orders with custom laws, heraldry, and doctrines. Sandbox mode gets economic tweaks and build timers to deepen management.
